Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

시크릿(secret)은 영어로 비밀이라는 뜻입니다. 그래서 구글 크롬 브라우저에서 '시크릿' 창을 열면 자신의 신원을 숨기고 익명으로 웹을 사용할 수 있다고 생각하기 쉽습니다.

시카고 대학교의 설문조사에 따르면 많은 사람들이 공지 사항의 작은 글씨를 읽은 후에도 비공개 브라우징 모드가 제공하는 이점을 지나치게 과대평가하는 것으로 나타났습니다. 예를 들어, 응답자의 대다수는 Google 계정에 로그인하더라도 자신의 검색 기록이 Google에 기록되지 않는다고 믿었습니다. 27%는 비공개 모드가 바이러스와 멀웨어로부터 사용자를 보호한다고 잘못 알고 있었습니다.

Chrome의 시크릿 모드는 기본적으로 타사 쿠키(브라우저에서 방문하는 웹사이트가 아닌 다른 웹사이트가 심어 놓은 추적 코드)를 차단하지만, 인터넷 세션 중에 쿠키와 사이트 데이터를 수집하기도 합니다. 이러한 쿠키는 임시 폴더에 저장되며 적어도 모든 시크릿 창을 닫을 때까지 삭제되지 않습니다.

예를 들어, 이러한 요청 중 하나는 실시간 웹사이트 분석 서비스 제공업체인 Chartbeat에 대한 것이었습니다. Chartbeat는 웹사이트가 트래픽, 사용자 참여도 및 기타 중요한 지표를 모니터링할 수 있도록 도와줍니다. 요청 URL에는 추적 픽셀(사용자 활동을 추적하는 데 사용되는 웹 페이지에 포함된 작은 이미지)과 호스트 이름, 페이지 URL, 사용자 ID, 기기 유형, 화면 해상도 등 다양한 매개변수를 데이터로 Chartbeat에게 보내도록 포함되어 있습니다.

AdGuard가 탐지한 추적 회사에 대한 요청

웹사이트는 이 데이터를 사용하여 세션 중에 광고를 게재할 수 있습니다.

그리고 시크릿 모드는 회사 또는 학교 네트워크를 사용할 시 IT 부서나 학교 네트워크 관리자로부터 브라우징 활동을 숨기지 않습니다. 즉, 네트워크 관리자가 아닌 경우(예: 커피숍에서 Wi-Fi를 사용하여 웹을 검색하는 경우)에는 시크릿 모드 여부와 상관없이 온라인 활동이 공개되어 있다고 간주해야 합니다.

또한 시크릿 모드는 인터넷 서비스 제공업체(ISP)가 사용자의 IP 주소를 추적하거나 활동 감시를 막을 수 없습니다.

시크릿 모드 창을 열면 표시되는 공지 사항을 기억하십니까? 여기에는 타사 웹사이트, 고용주, 학교가 사용자의 온라인 활동을 볼 수 있다고 언급되어 있습니다. 하지만 공지 사항에 언급되지 않은 중요한 당사자가 하나 더 있는데, 바로 Google 자체입니다.

시크릿 모드에 대한 착각

사실, 시크릿 모드는 보안이 없는 곳에 보안이 있는 것처럼 착각을 불러일으킵니다. 시크릿 모드의 적용 범위가 너무 좁아서 차라리 사용하지 않는 것이 더 나을 수도 있습니다. 특정 기간 동안의 검색 기록, 쿠키, 사이트 데이터를 지우고 싶다면 Chrome의 데스크톱 버전에서 추가 도구 → 인터넷 사용 기록 삭제를, 모바일 버전에서는 설정 → 개인정보 및 보안 → 인터넷 사용 기록 삭제를 선택해 삭제할 수 있습니다.

Google 개인정보 보호 컨트롤을 통해 검색 기록 삭제

하지만 온라인에서 개인정보와 익명성을 진정으로 보호하고 싶다면 훨씬 더 나은 방법이 있습니다.

그 중 하나는 인터넷 트래픽을 암호화하고 원격 서버를 통해 라우팅하는 서비스인 VPN(가상 사설망)을 사용하는 것입니다. VPN을 이용하면 인터넷 서비스 제공업체, 웹사이트 및 제3자로부터 사용자의 IP 주소와 위치를 숨길 수 있습니다. 많은 VPN 제공 업체가 있지만, 평판이 좋고 노로그 정책과 강력한 암호화를 제공하는 업체를 선택해야 합니다. 일반적으로 VPN은 연결 속도를 크게 저하시키지 않지만, 개인정보 보호 향상을 위해 속도 감소가 나타날 수도 있습니다.

Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

The video sites Openload, Streamango, Rapidvideo and OnlineVideoConverter are allegedly loading mining software on to visitors’ computers, making them generate tokens for the bitcoin-like cryptocurrency Monero, according to security firm Adguard.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. For Coinhive, which takes a 30 percent cut, that amounts to $540,000 per year.

Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

The video sites Openload, Streamango, Rapidvideo and OnlineVideoConverter are allegedly loading mining software on to visitors’ computers, making them generate tokens for the bitcoin-like cryptocurrency Monero, according to security firm Adguard.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. For Coinhive, which takes a 30 percent cut, that amounts to $540,000 per year.

假设，有用户要给其朋友寄一封信。信封封好后，写上朋友的姓名和地址，然后只要不破坏信封，就任何人都无法打开信封阅读内容。但任何人都可以查看地址，而且还会知道你要把信寄给谁。

这就是 HTTPS 的工作原理，即（一种默认协议，超过 84% 的网站都在使用它）。在与网站建立加密连接时，浏览器传递的第一条信息被称为“Client Hello”。Client Hello 中的某些信息，如 SNI（服务器名称指示，是浏览器告诉服务器它要连接到哪个网站的一种方式），是不加密的。这就意味着网络运营商，包括 ISP，可以查看这个信息。服务器在收到 Client Hello 信息后，会回复一些称为 “Server Hello” 的信息，以完成与设备的"交接"流程。

打完第一声“招呼”后，浏览器与服务器交换的数据就会加密，只有用户和网站才能看到其中的内容。但此时，你的网络提供商已经知道你访问的网站名称。例如，如果用户访问 www.google.com，网络提供商无法看到搜索记录，但可以看到用户就在使用 Google。

以上描述的就是 TLS 握手的工作原理。TLS 是传输层安全（英文：Transport Layer Security）的缩写，这是一种加密协议，为通过互联网发送的数据提供端到端的安全。说得更专业一点，浏览器以明文形式向网站服务器发送的第一条 “Client Hello” 信息不仅包含 SNI，还包含 TLS 版本和加密算法。但最重要的是，发送的第一个数据包没有加密，因此任何可以看到网络流量的人都可以看到浏览器请求的网站名称。

主要问题在于，我们怎样才能保护第一份未加密的、暴露我们浏览活动的数据包？

这就是 Encrypted Client Hello 协议的作用所在。简单地说，ECH 就是对包含 SNI 的 Client Hello 信息进行加密，如前所述，SNI 是指用户正在访问的网站的名称。浏览器不会向任何第三方泄漏网站的真实域名（如 www.google.com），而只会显示所谓的面向客户服务器（英文：client-facing server）的名称，在该服务器后面隐藏着多个拥有自己域名的后端服务器。面向客户的服务器有一个通用域名：例如，Cloudflare 使用 cloudflare-ech.com 作为其面向客户的服务器名称。但是，浏览器如何知道向它发送哪些信息才能连接到特定网站呢？

Client-facing server 就像一个中间人，有一个特殊的解密密钥，可以打开你发的内信，看到网站名称。然后，它将请求转发到真正的域名，并发回响应。之所以能做到这一点，是因为 ECH 将 Client Hello 分成两部分：外部部分包含非敏感信息，如 client-facing server 的名称；内部部分包含内部 SNI，表示后端服务器的域名，也就是用户要访问的网站。继续以信件做比喻：这就好比在写给不同收件人的信上写相同的地址，而要想看到带有实际地址的内层信件，则必须破坏信封。

采用 ECH 的情况如何？

近几个月来，越来越多的业内人士开始热衷于 ECH。Google 开始在 Chrome 浏览器 117 中提供该功能，而 Chrome 浏览器 118 成为支持 ECH 的 Google 浏览器的第一个稳定版本。在 Firefox 中，ECH 在 Firefox 118 中默认开启，但只有在启用 DNS-over-HTTPS 后才能正常运作。Edge 也在测试 ECH，但尚未推出稳定版本。

不过，浏览器对 ECH 的支持如果得不到服务器方面的回应，就没有什么意义。浏览器的支持只意味着浏览器可以向支持该协议的服务器发送加密的 ECH 信息。因此，市场上最受欢迎的 CDN 提供商 Cloudflare 也支持该协议的举措对 ECH 的采用产生巨大的影响。Cloudflare 处理互联网上大约 20% 的流量，宣布从 9 月底开始为所有免费计划的客户提供 ECH 支持，并鼓励付费客户申请该功能。

不过，该协议要被广泛接受和采用还有很长的路要走。目前，Cloudflare 的许多免费域名的 DNS 记录中都缺少有关 ECH 的信息，因此 Chrome 浏览器无法在这些网站上使用 ECH。不过，由于 ECH 的推广仍处于早期阶段，随着时间的推移，这个问题很可能即将得到解决。

那么隐私问题解决好了吗？

尽管我们希望尽早实现这个梦想，但似乎目前还只是我们的一厢情愿罢了。

一方面，如果 ECH 得到普遍采用，它将使世界各地互联网管理机构为打击网络盗版、实施地理围栏和审查而采用的一些久经考验的封堵技术失去作用。首先，执法当局将更难根据网站名称锁定特定网站，因为这些网站将被 ECH 隐藏。

ECH 缺点或潜在的拦截方式

Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.
