Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency
According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.
In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020
More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.
“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. For Coinhive, which takes a 30 percent cut, that amounts to $540,000 per year.

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. Las plataformas de publicidad en línea están llenas de anuncios fraudulentos que a menudo pasan desapercibidos por los sistemas de detección de fraudes. Por ejemplo, Google informó que eliminó más de 5.5 mil millones de anuncios el año pasado y suspendió 12.7 millones de cuentas de anunciantes por violar sus políticas, incluyendo la promoción de malware.

El objetivo de estas plataformas es bloquear los anuncios dañinos antes de que ingresen a sus redes o, al menos, eliminarlos lo más rápido posible después de que aparezcan. Google, al igual que la mayoría de los grandes operadores de redes publicitarias, depende en gran medida del machine learning y la inteligencia artificial para identificar y bloquear contenido fraudulento. Según Google, alrededor del 90% de las acciones de control a nivel de páginas de editores son realizadas por modelos de aprendizaje automático. Aunque este enfoque tecnológico es la única solución viable debido al enorme volumen de anuncios, no es infalible.

Piénsalo: si Google eliminó 5.5 mil millones de anuncios, ¿cuántos fueron aprobados y permanecieron activos? Es casi inevitable que algunos anuncios maliciosos (aquellos que promueven estafas o distribuyen malware) escapen de la detección hasta que sea demasiado tarde, es decir, hasta que ya estén circulando y engañando a personas.

La estafa: una falsa oportunidad de inversión

En un ejemplo preocupante de cómo los anuncios fraudulentos siguen apareciendo en grandes plataformas, un médico de un hospital público en India perdió impresionantes 90,000 dólares al caer en una estafa que llegó a él a través de un anuncio engañoso en YouTube. El periódico The Hindu informó que el Dr. Ramesh (nombre ficticio), profesor asociado en una universidad de medicina pública, fue víctima de un esquema elaborado que prometía altos retornos en inversiones.

La estafa comenzó cuando vio un anuncio en YouTube que ofrecía “entrenamiento y orientación” sobre cómo operar en el mercado de valores e invertir en IPOs de empresas reconocidas. El anuncio parecía profesional y convincente, lo que hizo que la oportunidad pareciera legítima. Fue llevado a unirse a un grupo de WhatsApp donde varias personas se hacían pasar por inversionistas exitosos, convenciéndolo aún más de que la inversión era confiable. Atraído por la promesa de ganancias fáciles, el Dr. Ramesh transfirió un total de ₹76.5 lakh (aproximadamente 90,000 dólares) a lo que creía que era una plataforma legítima de inversión en línea, pero que en realidad no lo era.

Solo se dio cuenta de que había sido estafado cuando intentó retirar los fondos.

Cómo funcionó la estafa: malvertising clásico

El anuncio que vio el Dr. Ramesh es un caso clásico de malvertising, en el que se usan anuncios engañosos o fraudulentos para atraer a los usuarios a estafas. La clave de este tipo de estafa es hacer que los anuncios parezcan provenientes de fuentes confiables. Son prácticamente indistinguibles de los legítimos, lo que aumenta las probabilidades de que pasen desapercibidos por los sistemas de seguridad altamente automatizados.

En el caso del Dr. Ramesh, el anuncio estaba en YouTube, una plataforma en la que los usuarios generalmente confían en el contenido que ven, lo que pudo haber inclinado la balanza a favor de los estafadores.

Lo que hace que este caso sea particularmente alarmante es el hecho de que el Dr. Ramesh es un profesional altamente educado y capacitado, alguien que, en teoría, sería más cauteloso al encontrarse con un anuncio potencialmente fraudulento. Sin embargo, su vulnerabilidad muestra que nadie está exento de ser víctima de estafas en línea. Internet se ha convertido en un campo minado, donde cualquier persona, independientemente de su profesión o experiencia, puede ser víctima de fraudes.

Cómo protegerte de los anuncios fraudulentos

El modelo de ingresos basado en publicidad de YouTube ha creado un dilema para los usuarios. YouTube ofrece una opción: pagar por una suscripción a YouTube Premium para dejar de ver anuncios o seguir usando YouTube gratuitamente, pero soportar una avalancha de anuncios. Sin embargo, ni siquiera todos los suscriptores de YouTube Premium están protegidos. YouTube Premium Lite, que es más económico que el plan premium estándar y fue reintroducido recientemente en algunos países seleccionados, todavía muestra anuncios, dejando a los usuarios vulnerables a contenido dañino.

Con el aumento en el número de anuncios fraudulentos, la mejor defensa es un enfoque proactivo. Por ejemplo, el FBI recomienda usar bloqueadores de anuncios como primera línea de defensa. Al bloquear anuncios antes de que se carguen, puedes evitar propagandas potencialmente peligrosas y reducir el riesgo de caer en estafas.

Hasta que las redes publicitarias y plataformas implementen controles aún más estrictos, la mejor manera de protegerte es usar un bloqueador de anuncios y tener cuidado con cualquier anuncio que parezca demasiado bueno para ser verdad.
