Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. For Coinhive, which takes a 30 percent cut, that amounts to $540,000 per year.

Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

The video sites Openload, Streamango, Rapidvideo and OnlineVideoConverter are allegedly loading mining software on to visitors’ computers, making them generate tokens for the bitcoin-like cryptocurrency Monero, according to security firm Adguard.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. For Coinhive, which takes a 30 percent cut, that amounts to $540,000 per year.

Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

Hacked websites could be using your computer to mine cryptocurrency

According to a recent report from AdGuard, more than 200 of the top 100,000 sites on the web were hosting suspicious code. That may not seem like a big deal, but even sites near the bottom of that list draw a huge amount of traffic. The most popular one on AdGuard's list regularly pulls in around 60 million visits every month.

In total, AdGuard discovered cryptocurrency mining code on 220 sites over a three-week period. During that time around 500 million users unknowingly ran that code on their computers.

Bitcoin mining on track to consume all of the world’s energy by 2020

More than half a billion people may be inadvertently mining cryptocurrencies from their computers, smartphones and other devices, according to research conducted earlier this year by ad blocking firm AdGuard.

“How much money have these websites made? We estimate their joint profit at over $43,000,” the AdGuard researchers said in an October blogpost that detailed their discovery. At the time, one bitcoin was worth around $5,000.

The video sites Openload, Streamango, Rapidvideo and OnlineVideoConverter are allegedly loading mining software on to visitors’ computers, making them generate tokens for the bitcoin-like cryptocurrency Monero, according to security firm Adguard.

“We came across several very popular websites that secretly use the resources of users’ devices for cryptocurrency mining,” said Andrey Meshkov, co-founder of Adguard. “According to SimilarWeb, these four sites register 992m visits monthly.”

Although the developers aren't saying how much money they've made from their idea, online ad-blocking service AdGuard also found the Coinhive miner on over 30,000 sites and estimates the code generates $150,000 in Monero every month. For Coinhive, which takes a 30 percent cut, that amounts to $540,000 per year.

Привет всем!
2016 подошел к концу - пора подвести итоги и оценить, чего мы добились в этом году. Но прежде всего, мы хотим поблагодарить вас за то, что остаетесь с нами и поддерживаете Adguard.

Удивительно, как много всего может произойти всего за один год. Итак, ключевые события Adguard 2016, поехали:

Январь

Почти половина января прошла в новогоднем веселье, но, вернувшись к работе, мы первым делом выпустили обновление для Android, версию 2.1. В этой статье мы не будем расписывать все нововведения каждого релиза, но оставим ссылки, для тех, кому интересны подробности.

Февраль

Февраль начался с релиза браузерного расширения, версия 2.1 которого стала гораздо более легковесной.

Одним из самых долгожданных стал релиз Adguard 6.0
(версия для Windows). В 2015 году пользователи просто завалили нас вопросами о дате выхода этой версии. Именно она ознаменовала полностью обновленный интерфейс, новые функции и новую главу в истории продукта.

Следующими новую версию получили пользователи Adguard для iOS. Это один из самых новых наших Адгардов, первый официальный релиз которого состоялся в октябре 2015. В этой версии мы продолжили доводить до ума общую работу приложения.

Обновления мы делаем для всех, поэтому следующие на очереди - пользователи Mac. Исправлений и нововведений здесь оказалось достаточно много, и лучше всего о них расскажет отдельный пост про версию 1.2.0 :)

Март

В марте мы разработали глобальный roadmap (план развития), над которым и в данный момент продолжаем активно работать. Многое, кстати, мы успели выполнить уже в этом году! Вообще, если вам интересно, как развивается Adguard, вы всегда можете "последить" за нами - все наши задачи по работе над программными продуктами отображены на GitHub.

Затем последовал релиз новой версии расширения. Да, прошёл только месяц с прошлого релиза, но это нововведение стало особенно важным из-за изменений в расширении для Firefox и технических дополнений в «инструменте выделения».

Апрель

В апреле мы продолжили дорабатывать версию 6.0 Adguard для Windows, выпущенную в феврале, получили обратную связь, исправили ошибки и выложили обновление - версию 6.0.2240.

19-20 апреля мы участвовали в конкурсе стартапов
на международном фестивале Webit. У нас был свой стенд, где мы знакомили с Adguard всех заинтересованных. А затем выступали с презентацией перед членами жюри. И угадайте что? Мы выиграли этот конкурс и получили главный приз: инвестиции в 200 000 евро :)

Апрель завершился очень важным релизом Adguard для Android. В целом, именно начиная с версии 2.5 в приложение добавилась https фильтрация, что означает блокировку рекламы на YouTube, Вконтакте, Твиттере и вообще где угодно.

Май

В мае мы выложили версию 1.0.6
Adguard для iOS, которая подарила возможность ручной блокировки любого отдельного элемента на странице.

Мы всегда серьезно относились к вопросам безопасности личных данных пользователей. И всегда стремились быть максимально открытыми. Поэтому мы решили сформулировать нашу политику в отношении open source и открыть исходный код
наших бесплатных продуктов (браузерные расширения, Adguard для iOS). Зачем? Бесплатные приложения как правило вызывают вопросы - не зарабатывают ли разработчики на передаче ваших данных третьим лицам. Это точно не наш вариант, мы зарабатываем на продаже лицензий к нашим программам. А бесплатные версии выкладываем в общий доступ (нам скрывать нечего:)) и считаем, что все бесплатные продукты должны следовать такой практике.

Июнь

Июнь начался довольно бодро - с введения нового фильтра раздражителей в большинство продуктов Adguard.

Затем последовал релиз версии 2.6
Adguard для Android с DNS-серверами, улучшенной совместимостью со сторонними приложениями, ~~блекджеком~~ и огромным количеством других изменений.

А затем было выпущено обновление для Mac, которое сделало Adguard более быстрым и менее потребляющим ресурсы батареи.

Одним из самых парадоксальных моментов этого года стало повышение цен! В конце июня мы, оценив наши траты в валюте с её нестабильными скачками, поняли, что настало время немного поднять цены. Мы никогда не делали этого ранее и заранее расстраивались, ожидая волну негатива. И вдруг, наши пользователи невероятно удивили нас. Мы получили огромную поддержку и множество слов благодарности за Adguard. Это было довольно неожиданно и ооочень приятно.
Самое смешное, что когда мы закончили разрабатывать новую ценовую политику (добавив скидки на покупку ключей для 2 и более устройств), мы внезапно поняли, что цены на такие ключи остались ровно такими же, а некоторые даже получились дешевле чем были ツ

Июль

В первый день июля мы выпустили новый продукт -
блокировщик контента Adguard. По сути это такая бесплатная версия Adguard для Android для мобильных браузеров Яндекс и Самсунг. Что она делает, какие у неё функции - вы легко узнаете из блога.

Август

Прежде всего мы выпустили версию 2.7 приложения для Android, которая собрала в себе много важных обновлений, вроде нового Брандмауэра и дополнительных возможностей для создания собственных правил фильтрации.

А затем мы, наконец, переехали на новый блог. Те, кто читали нас ранее, способны по-настоящему оценить, насколько этот блог выглядит круче - лаконично, понятно и... модно :)

Ну и под конец месяца не обошлось без обновления расширения для браузеров и новой версии Adguard для Windows. Последняя, кстати, добавила несколько полезных функций в модуль Антитрекинга (который отвечает за безопасность личных данных). Подробнее можно почитать тут.

Сентябрь

В июле выпустили, в сентябре пересмотрели. Выпустили новую версию блокировщика контента, где полностью изменили дизайн (старая версия была блёклой и не очень понятной).

И главная новость сентября - выпуск нового продукта на радость пользователям яблочных смартфонов. Adguard Pro для iOS, приложение для iPhone и iPad, которое способно блокировать рекламу даже в приложениях. Это, кстати и есть основное её отличие от обычного приложени Adguard для iOS.

Октябрь

В октябре мы выпустили обновление для бесплатной версии приложения на iPad/iPhone и наладили поддержку DNSCrypt для нашего Adguard DNS

Ноябрь

И снова обновление для пользователей Android - версия 2.8! Здесь получилось очень много изменений (у нас идёт серьёзная подготовка к релизу 3.0!).

Декабрь

И, наконец, в декабре мы снова обновили браузерное расширение. Версия 2.5.8 по сути исправляет все найденные ошибки, так что расширение в целом будет работать стабильнее.

Потом выпустили новую версию Adguard для Mac, в которой множество внутренних изменений. Вы знаете где их можно посмотреть :)

И буквально на днях вышло обновление обоих приложений для iOS. Adguard Pro даёт пользователям больше возможностей для настройки фильтрации под свои нужды, делает приложение более удобным в использовании для слепых пользователей и пользователей с ослабленным зрением.
