Annoyed by ads interrupting the most crucial moments of your favorite streams on Twitch? Been there, we know the pain. So today, we wanted to talk about how to block twitch ads.
Hopefully, it won’t be another CoolStoryBob
for you, but will actually bring some new knowledge on the matter.

Ads on Twitch have been advancing in technological sense, in 2016 so-called SureStream ads were introduced, making ads more embedded into the video streams and resistant to adblockers. Surely, Twitch will continue its efforts to improve these aspects, because they are clearly focused on maximising advertising income: they even made ad-free subscription more expensive from September 2018 (Twitch Prime won't do it no more, you need Twitch Turbo now). That's why we have to pay attention to how to block new ads on Twitch.
To cut the long story short, there are three main options regarding how to block ads on Twitch:
1. Methods related to Twitch itself (Subscriptions)
2. Non-native Twitch player extensions/apps
3. Use of adblock to block video ads

Method 1: How to stop Twitch ads using Twitch itself
Subscribing to channels
If you subscribe to a broadcaster, it stops all third-party ads on their stream.
Buy Twitch Turbo subscription
(Twitch Prime doesn't remove ads anymore)
Getting Twitch Turbo, among other benefits, lets you remove all ads from Twitch at once, because in this case broadcasters receive revenue from your Turbo subscription.
<< NOT relevant since October 2018 >> TIP: Twitch Prime can be acquired free of additional charge if you have Amazon Prime account. Just connect it to your Twitch account and you are good to go.
↑ UPDATE: You can still do that, but Twitch Prime doesn't remove ads anymore.
NOTE: Even these methods remove just Twitch-based ads, ads coming from streamer and his affiliated programs cannot be removed, since they are a part of the video stream itself.
Method 2: How to block Twitch ads with non-native Twitch player apps/extensions
There are various third-party apps and extensions out there, that allow you to watch Twitch streams ad-free.
On top of that, some of them present useful additional features like instant replay of the last minutes of the live broadcast, "Audio only" mode etc.
Just to name a few, Alternate Player for Twitch.tv (PC, Chrome) and Pocket Plays for Twitch (Android) would be appropriate examples for this method.
Method 3: How to stop Twitch ads using adblock
Basically, blocking ads on Twitch is similar to blocking any other video ads, and that’s similar to blocking ads in general: the trick is effective adblock and filters.
Adblocking on desktop PCs
For desktop computers, you can choose an extension for your favorite browser, e.g. Google Chrome.
If you want to block ads in the desktop Twitch app as well, you might want to consider a stand-alone adblock program.
Adblocking on mobile devices
Unfortunately, with mobile devices it is not all so satisfying.
In case of Android, most of the time you could get rid of Twitch ads in the browsers, but not in the Twitch app itself, because in latter case https-filtering is needed, and that, unfortunately, is only available to do on rooted Android devices.
With iOS, the situation is even worse. Don’t be surprised, if adblock is not working on Twitch app. Basically, both architecture of iOS and Apple’s policy prevents adlockers from blocking any ads outside Safari browser. Yes, you’ve read it right: on iOS devices, Twitch ads can be stopped only if you watch it in Safari browser.
Apple is pulling a huge JeBaited
on us with this one.
