Ads on Android can be very intrusive and annoying. Aggressive announcements with offers or demands to buy, order, download something, etc. often occur on lots of mobile sites. Various free applications also have ads that appear when you least expect them.
Moreover mobile devices have relatively small displays and it’s not always possible to close a window with ads or skip an announcement especially for men whose fingers are simply bigger. Dishonest advertisers also understand it and make buttons “close” and “skip” very small. All this spoils the impression from using an application or a site causing distress. This is the reason why a lot of users wonder how to remove ads from Android.
Adguard application developers offer to get rid of intrusive announcements, make Internet presence safe and maximally comfortable once and forever. Besides version for Android the company has programs for Windows, Mac OS, 2 more applications for mobile devices on iOS, 6 browser extensions, and 1 DNS filter in its armoury. These products are popular both among experienced and new users.
Key advantages of Adguard. Adblock for Android
Adguard blocks advertisement from various sources. Besides site banners, other cunning ads types such as announcements in games, video insertions, etc. will be removed.
It’s possible because of a unique technology the application is based upon. All incoming and outcoming traffic comes through a special filter. This blocks undesired connections.
Besides pop-up windows on Android the application also:
Blocks potentially unsecure users actions;
Prevents from visiting sites that can cause harm to your mobile device or steal personal data (phishing, spies);
Prevents from downloading potentially malicious applications and files.
Convenience of use is one more Adguard advantage. The interface looks really user friendly, all buttons are at their traditional places, handling is intuitive and clear.
Adguard possibilities — maximum security
Adblock for android works by the means of traffic filtration using VPN or local HTTP proxy.
In the first case you won't need ROOT permission which is one of the program features. VPN creates right on a smartphone or a tablet which means that no traffic goes to a remote server. In such a way filter “catches” most of the threats.
The second option is mostly for the users with rooted devices. If ROOT permissions are not available manual proxy setting is needed. In this case Adguard for Android won’t filter mobile internet.
Both modes have their own peculiarities:
Local VPN doesn't turn on automatically. This limit is set by OS Android itself. Also, this filter won’t work simultaneously with other VPN applications, it there are any installed on a device.
HTTP proxy controls only limited subset of all traffic. This means that it doesn't guarantee full blocking and statistics in this mode is not precise. But this type of protection is good for the users who don’t work with application and sites but set their connection via UDP and other off standard ports.
How Adguard filters traffic through HTTP?
A of today this adblock for Android is the most reliable due to unique protection mechanisms. Numerous sites working on the most popular HTTP protocol that spread advertisement use safe protocol version – HTTPS (Secure). In this case the code is used for the most important and confidential data, for example credit card numbers and for advertisement. In such a way, it becomes possible to show it in spite of installed adblockers. But Adguard won’t be put upon!
To «catch» coded ads Adguard creates 2 secure connections. One with a browser or an application that contains advertisement and another with a server. A browser “believes” this connection because a root certificate is created and installed in the system and, if needed, also in a browser itself. Both connection and traffic stay protected, as adblock for Android Adguard checks server as well as browser certificate before letting the traffic in.
In this mode the application doesn’t filter sites of different financial services and the ones that contain personal data. Totally there are 2 HTTPS filtration modes:
Monitoring connection from the “black list”.
Filtration turned on for all connections but the ones from the “white list”. This very list contains banks and financial companies sites addresses.
To turn on filtration you need to install a certificate. OS Android will ask to set a graphic key or a numeric password. After storage installation the application should be reset. If everything is done correctly HTTPS traffic will be filtered the same way as a normal one.
Adguard installation and setting
The application is not available in Play Market. And no wonder because the “goodness corporation” also watches its users, so such programs are not always welcomed there. The reason is that while other adblockers do show some of ads on Android, Adguard blocks it in any of it in all forms.
You can download the program by downloading .apk file from the official site. Place the installer in the folder you like and start it. Your devices should allow to install applications from other but PlayMarket sources. You can check it in Security or applications settings (depending on OS version).
During installation Adguard will ask the user permission for VPN installation. To continue a tick should be put in a corresponding checkbox.
Main Adguard functions
All in all, the application has 3 modules that help both to remove ads on Android and to make Internet presence safe and fast.
Anti-banner — blocks any ad types.
Anti-phishing — protects from phishing and malicious sites.
Brandmauer — fights unauthorized connections.
Anti-banner doesn't let pop-ups, banners, video-advertisement and other ad announcements go. The user can choose what to block and what to leave. In such a way, you can leave context advertisement in Yandex and Google which doesn’t annoy and sometimes even helps to find certain product or service. It’s possible to block social networks widgets (for example, buttons “I like”), irritants like pop-ups and notifications, analytical and tracking systems. All this also helps to download pages and applications with integrated ads faster, as advertisement slows down their work.
Anti-phishing will check all visited pages and apk-files with the help of its own filter. Initializing a site or downloading a file Adguard checks the domain you're entering with its filters base. In case of matching up the program instantly breaks down the connection and informs the user. All this process takes tenths of a second!
Each user can make Internet safer putting a tick in a correspondent checkbox in anti-phishing settings. The application will send anonymous statistics to developers which helps to widen unsafe sites filtering base and ads in Android browser will never appear.
Due to special filter anti-phishing won't let any counters or advertisement networks watch your actions, which can include tracing your requests and visited sites to use this data for personal profit. Otherwise they can easily use the information collected to determine your sex, age, interests and a lot more.
Adguard brandmauer, unlike Android Adblock, blocks applications access to the network. You can set certain rights for each application separately or make them the same for all programs and choose the means of connections. It means that it’s possible to block the connection via mobile networks or Wi-Fi both with a mobile device display on and off.
Additional Adguard functions
The application has DNS-filtering available, which means that all connections with phishing, advertisement and other malicious systems will be eliminated by the means of local processing and blocking the requests that turn a domain name into digital combinations of an IP-address.
The system is the following:
A false answer that redirects connection to the localhost (127.0.0.1) is sent;
An application or a browser that tries to connect to the server on the blocked domain stats to connect with itself and receives an error.
There is no such function in most of other blockers, for example in Adblock for Yandex. It significantly strengthens security, but it doesn’t work as a sole solution. The reason is that some systems use analogic domains for advertisement and for useful data. In such case DNS-filtration lowers battery and processor load because dangerous addresses are quickly blocked, but the whole domains you often visit can also be blocked.
This type of protection is unavailable in HTTP-proxy mode, because it requests absolutely all traffic to be filtered – not only the coded one. DNS has no problems working with local VPN.
Adguard and energy consumption – how to remove ads from Android and save the battery charge?
Most of today’s smartphones models have their battery resource estimated for 24 hours in average usage mode. No wonder that a lot of users are concerned about energy saving while using different blockers, for example Adblock for Adguard.
Logic suggests that any anti-advertisement application should save the battery, because energy used for ad scripts download, processing and demonstration is simply not used. But energy waste statistics that is reflected in OS settings shows different information. Most always Adguard is on top of the applications that «quickly waste battery». So, how to remove ads from Android without charging a smartphone 2–3 times per day?
Actually, what shows statistics in not a real true. This can be explained by the fact that the main expenditure item in any smartphone is mobile internet. Then go - a display, a Wi-Fi module and a central processor. All traffic that a gadget consumes goes through Adguard. So, statistics counts wastes of all other applictions that need Internet for their work as Adguard's. More detailed information about it you can find in our official blog, where you can also find results of a small research that proves that statistics “lies”.
Conclusions – how useful is this application?
Adguard for Android is one of the best applications that has an adblocking function by default and for free for all browsers without any ROOT permission. Cherry on the cake and distinguishable feature of the program is that you can ask for a trial premium period for 7 days. You will have all opportunities available, and by the end of this period a license key will be accessible on the official site.
To sum it up Adguard provides:
Full blocking of all types of ads on Android device – no advertisement on sites, in applications, in video;
Safe Internet presence – the program will prevent from malicious soft download, protect form a virus or personal data stealing.
Fasten pages download due to removed ads that wastes traffic and devices resources;
