AdGuard for Android v4.10: New HTTPS certificate installation flow
AdGuard for Android v4.10 introduces a key improvement designed to make the app more intuitive for new users: setting up the HTTPS certificate is now easier for everyone, regardless of their technical background.
But before we explore what’s new, let’s take a moment to revisit what the HTTPS certificate is — and why it matters.
What is a HTTPS certificate?
HTTPS is a secure version of HTTP that encrypts your data to protect it from eavesdropping. It’s used to safely send personal info such as passwords or credit card numbers.
However, encryption alone isn’t enough — you also need to know you’re connected to the right website. That’s what security certificates are for: they prove a site’s identity. If the certificate is missing or incorrect, your browser will block the unsafe connection.
Most websites now use HTTPS — including websites that show ads. Without HTTPS filtering, AdGuard can’t block ads on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, or X.
New installation flow
When you install AdGuard and launch the app for the first time, you’re prompted to install an HTTPS certificate. This step is essential because the certificate plays a key role in ensuring effective ad filtering in browsers. Without it, filtering quality is significantly reduced. That’s why it’s crucial for all users, beginner or advanced, to be able to complete the installation without difficulty.
We knew there was room for improvement in the whole process — the previous instructions often didn’t reflect the actual settings found on devices from different manufacturers, and there was also a bug that prevented users from returning to the instructions after leaving the app.
To address these issues, we’ve added in-app guides for the most common devices — including Google Pixel, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and OnePlus — with adjustments based on Android OS version and user locale. We’ve also fixed the bug mentioned above.
Your feedback is important
If you use AdGuard for Android, you’ve likely already completed the certificate installation, so these changes may not affect you directly. Still, you can check the full changelog for other updates and minor improvements.
